AG's don't need to hear a smoke alarm over & over to learn to mimic it. They can pick it up in an instant.

You need to teach her another sound, something that sounds pleasant & cheerful & if it sounds like this, more than likely your AG will want to learn it. They enjoy picking up sounds & words that have enthusiasum & cheerful sounds to them.

I am more concerned how he was able to pick up the sound of the Smoke Alarm. Does your alarm get activated too often?

Many people have given you the suggestion to ignore her, and that is the only way to stop it. She will remember it though and may bring it up once in a while, but as long as you ignore her, it should stop for the most part. Even saying "No" or "naughty bird" is enough of a reward so that she keeps doing it. Literally turn your back on her and don't say anything, don't turn on the radio, don't do anything. Otherwise she will learn that you look her way, or perform some "trick" when she does it. Birds are quite amazing! They learn very quickly that certain words, phrases, sounds elicite certain behaviours around them. If she learns that you look her way when she makes that noise, she will always do it to get you to look at her. Or if each time she makes the noise, you turn on the radio, she will do it whenever she wants to listen to it. You need to reward the good sounds she makes and ignore completely the bad ones.

Mine did the same thing. She used her alarm call whenever she would see us outside of the house or about to leave. It drove me crazy too but I just ignored it and made sure I didn't set off the alarm again. It took about a month but she forgot about it and no longer does it. Now she yells YOU-WHO.

Do you mean a rainbow lorikeet? It all depends where you are. My eclectus cost about £600. You need to get the biggest cage you can afford, but you can get one on ebay 2nd hand nice and big. They should be taken to a vet about once a year.

I assume you mean the rainbow lorikeet? In Australia... Where hundreds of them fly around and eat in the trees of my backyard... cost anywhere between $130-$200 for a hand raised, tame bird. The cost depends on wether you buy from a breeder or pet shop. There are also many colour mutations of the Lorikeet (blue fronted, red collar, scaley breasted), which depending on how rare the colour is, can cost up to $350. A decent sized cage for a Rainbow Lorikeet will cost you about $200. They are very active birds and do best in a larger cage than your standard cockatiel sized cage. I buy all my cages from Ebay as it's much cheaper to buy from there than from a pet shop.

Bird toys can cost between $5-$40 depending on the size, material and what it does. I have found that my birds prefer toys made out of natural materials like wood and things that they can chew on. Aviod brightly coloured plastic toys. These are eye candy to humans but are a waste of money as birds don't play with them.

Rainbow Lorikeets have a specialised diet consisting of a wet and dry lorikeet mix. Each packet costs about $12. As with most birds, they also like fruit.

You will also need to buy worming treatment for your bird and mite and lice spray. This needs to be done about every 6 weeks. You can buy various sized bottles ranging from $7-$20.

Becasue of their diet they have very runny poos and are very messy. They also have a large pooping radius around their cage. They love to bathe in their water and are also very very loud, especially in the early hours of the morning. They have a very high pitched screech. They do learn to immitate pretty well and are fun little birds to play with.

There are also many other types of brightly coloured parrots. Eclectus parrots (the males are green and the females are red and blue) cost between $700-$1200. Blue and gold Macaws cost about $7500. Alexandrines (green) cost about $400, the list could go on forever... However rainbow lorikeets are pretty good first birds, as long as you are prepared to deal with the noise and the mess.
