Grill for Parrot Cage?

CHRIS A asked:

I just bought a Parrot Cage second hand from ebay, and everything is great except obviously needs a clean, but i noticed that there is a vital part of the cage missing.. the grill that covers the pull out tray. After looking at the photo on the ebay ad again, you can just about notice that there isnt actually one there either, nevertheless i emailed the person just incase and awaiting an answer.
I was just wondering, does anyone know if these can be bought seperately or if one can be made? I suppose if i cannot get one then the cage is pretty useless as in the books i’ve read, they rule that the grill stops the bird from eating dropped food and their own mess etc.

What does one suggest? (Im pretty clueless as this is my first parrot cage and due to get my first parrot at the end of the month which will be a Blue Fronted Amazon.)
Another problem i face is the fact the door is little (9″ wide x 7″ high) and i really dont see me being able to get the amazon out this way, and cant really be expected to just get the bird out through the top.
The makers of the cage is a ‘Essegi’ which i have looked up but have not found much info at all.
Its strange for such a big cage with wide spacing between bars to have such a little door. Surely they should have known the sizes of parrots?

I don’t use any cage without a grill. If the seller isn’t able to send you a grill for it, ask them who the manufacturer of the cage is, if you don’t already know. I know some companies like Kings Cages, etc. can send replacements so contact them and find out.

If you can’t get a hold of one from the manufacturer, I’d get one that would fit from another company.

The problem is, as you stated, that the birds can get down there and eat their droppings and discarded food. But, there are other problems too. The bird will walk through the droppings getting his feet dirty. This can crust to the feet and cause further problems too.

Also, with newspaper or other lining on the cage bottom, birds who have access to it can start shredding it. It doesn’t sound like much but it can lead to nesting behavior which can in turn lead to some very bad behaviors that are difficult to retrain.

If after all efforts you still are unable to find a grate to replace it, I would even consider having one made to avoid all the complications of not having one. The cage won’t be completely useless without it, but life will be much easier with it. Without one you’ll need to be changing it several times per day to keep the bird from walking through droppings, eating discarded food, shredding up the lining material, etc.

Oh, and one other thought is that some cages aren’t secure without the grate. Many cages keep the bird secure in the cage by way of the grate, but when the grate is not there, they can easily slide out the bottom pan and escape.

A blue front for a first parrot is a big step! :) They are nice birds…. a lot of work but still can be very good birds! Good luck with him. :)

A grill is optional. You don’t neccessarily need to have one. I have grills only on the cages that were bought with grills. I can find them very hard to clean at times where placing news paper down on the floor is easier as you can roll it up & replace it quicker than you can pull out a grill & scrub it daily.

Some poeple refuse to use them because birds can get their feet caught in them if they aren’t careful.

The grills are mainly used to keep parrots from walking in their own poo howver, not all the poo slips through!

Some good training & encouraging to keep of the cage floor & regular clean is all you need to do.

To find a grate? I guess if you google or check some local bird places or even ebay you might be able to find a grill suitable for the cage.

For the cage size. How big is the actual cage? An amazon needs a large cage & from what I recall large cages don’t never have small openings, so, you may need to buy the correct size cage for you bird. They require space in their cages.

Ok I just found only a couple of the Essegi cages than & they were very big cages with tiny openings. I also noticed on the cages I found they look ratehr flimsly, not strong enough to hold a parrot in. The bars were very thin. A picture of yours would help but I would advise on eitehr requesting to send the cage back & get a refund & buy a better cage elsewhere if ya can.

As for knowing what parrots sizes are required for cage making, I had noticed they sell a mainly hutches so, it’s possible they may be just doing the odd parrot cage to add to their cage & hutch collection. I would also say they’re hard to find as they probably don’t sell that well.

Apart from this the only other option would be to make a slightly larger opening for the door & use the cage as a temp out door avairy to take your amazon outside on occasions & get a better cage for indoors.

This si the website I found on the Essegi cages. About the middle is couple of their cages.
I would never recommend a parrot live in a cage like these. They look like parrot cages but they’re not.
