my mom has a quaker and she keeps “zupreem” pellets in his cage and he asks for them ” zu-preem” and mom fills his bowl

We use a good parakeet seed mix. Seed mixed for large parrots usually has sunflower seeds which are addictive. They have mixes with dried fruit and a variety of seed. They also like millet sprays but they’re a treat not a meal.

Dried fruit works well. Even fresh fruit is fine, just be sure to empty it daily. Cooked rice, corn, beans and pastas; hard boiled eggs, Cheerios, plain popcorn and some seeds are also a good mix.

You don’t necessarily have to pay a premium price for pellets if you’re willing to do a little cooking and food prep!

He should have pellets at all times and some seed. I use Zupreem fruit blend pellets and Roudybush maintenance mixed together. I mix two pellets because:

1) One manufacturer might go out of business someday and then you will have to introduce a new pellet to your bird and that can take awhile. If the other pellet is still available at least he is eating one type of pellet.

2) Avian nutrition is still not a definite science. I figure mixing two together might make up for any deficits the other has.

I feed my birds cooked foods, fruits and veggies in the evening when I am home from work.

Tell Sammi hi from me and Pete. (My quaker)
We leave Pete with bird seed, fresh tube of water and whatever else I have handy. Like popcorn, lettuce, carrots, corn and he loves pasta!

Any type of pellet is good. My bird likes Harrison’s and Roudybush the best! You can leave pellets, fresh vegetables, and cooked pasta/rice for your bird. I wouldn’t leave seeds in there all day because birds should only get a small amount of seeds per day. Just keep trying different brands of pellets until you find one Sammi likes

Any type of pellets should be left in the cage 24/7 for your quaker. They should also get fresh food daily, pasta, veggies, beans, fruits but make sure they are taken out after an hour or two. Seeds are not good to have as a staple diet for quaker parrots as they are prone to fatty liver disease. Seeds are way too fatty and I’ve known several people who have lost their quakers to this disease. As for what kind of pellets to get it really depends on what your quaker will eat. You can email harrisons, roudibush, zupreem, and the others and they will usually send you samples to try, then you can go from there on what to buy for your quaker. I personally use zupreem for the most part but I will personally add it other types often so that if something would happen and I can’t get zupreem they will eat something else that is on hand. Quakers are very finicky when it comes to changes. They have the natural pellets and then they have the fruity pellets, again this is a choice, some ppl say fruity pellets are linked to plucking in quakers but I’ve got 5 quakers and not one plucks so it’s a personal choice. Anyway I hope this has helped ya some.

On another note to all of you with quakers on a seed diet please for the health of your quaker get them switched over to a pellet diet and just give them seeds a couple times a week in small amounts.

I feed my quakers cockatiel seed and parrot seed. I also give them lots of millet. I feed them the parakeet FRUIT PELLETS and KAYTEE hand feeding formula in a dry bowl as treats. They also love apples

hijabigirl1973: can you post the link to the conversion method? I have a new baby quaker (2 months old) that the breeder weaned to a diet of roudibush and cockatiel seed (which contains sunflower seeds (and I know they are not good for her)). I purchased zupreem but she doesn’t seem to want to eat the pellets, so I also have purchased a dehydrated mix of legumes, fruit, coconut, etc. that a local person makes for parrots. I hydrate and give to her once a day.

Want to take her off the seed mix (at least most of it, I read that they should have some seed, but not sunflowers). Can you provide the link? Thanks.
