Why does my parrot like to eat from the bottom of his cage?

we took in my grandmothers parrot a little while back, she had him for many years but due to really bad arthritis she couldn’t care for him anymore. I fill his food dish but he gets all his food and throws it to the bottom of the cage, then he walks on the bottom and sticks his feet through the bars and picks up what he wants. Why does he do this? Does he not like the food we are giving him?

Most birds in the wild find their food on the ground like
worms, seeds, bug and other things its normal my cousins parrot does that also.

Your grate must be near the bottom of the cage for the bird to reach through it. Maybe the grate wasn’t in the cage all the time before and the bird got used to eating from the bottom. Many birds like to toss their food. . There doesnt seem to be any way to stop it . You could put a paper on the grate or remove the grate altogether but that allows the bird to walk in the droppings. Perhaps you are overfeeding him . Try feeding him smaller amounts twice a day instead of loading up the dish all at once. It also is a possibility the bird is bored and amusing himself. He should have toys and it sounds as though he might like foot toys.
