Would a Quaker parrot be a good pet?
August 27th, 2009 | by Adrian |I have the opertunity to get a paip of bonded quaker parrots, with the cage and toys. Recently my moms other bird died and she has been waqnting another bird. She had a canary before. Do you think these birds would be a good choice, or are they really loud. My mom doesnt mind singing, chirping, talking ect.., But She wouldnt like a lot of screaching. My brothers girlfriend has an african grey that she brings over and my mom just loves it. Do you think these would be a good choice of a bird for my mom?

Get your mom another canary..the Quakers are as different from canaries as they can get. Their loud..very loud and can bite alot harder than a canary. They also eat totally different foods than a canary. And alot messier.
But Quakers are cool birds if you have the experience.

Quakers are pretty noisy, its a fact. Some owners do have quiet ones but on the whole they are pretty loud. Louder than a grey, not as loud as say a sun conure.
It depends on what your mom wants. If she wants a pet quality bird that sits on her shoulder a bonded pair isn’t the best choice because they bond with each other instead of with the owner. These parrots also get a bit cage territorial.
You might want to do a bit of research into this type of parrot before making your choice. Here is a link for you to start, you can ask questions on the forum about them:
If she wants a good starter parrot you might want to consider a pacific parrotlet, a cockatiel or a pionus parrot. I have a pionus and the breed is known for how quiet they are and they do talk but not on the scale of a grey or quaker.

Uhm im a bird behavioralist and i also own a Bird store, Quakers are known for their abiltity to talk their very good talkers, they need lots of time and love and devotion if you dont bond with it , it will become cage bounded, and you will have to work with it even more
some good birds are Lovebirds(1) if you get two you have to care for them extreamly and if you get one NO MIRROR toys they will think there is another toy in the cage
sun conures are very beautiful and make a great pet
and cockatoos are the friendlist birds i know

NOOO. I have had my quaker for 13 years and every day is a struggle with her. I also have cockatiels and parakeets. If your mom had only had canaries before but is looking for a bit tamer and larger bird I would strongly suggest a cockatiel. They are very smart- not talkers- but great whistlers. They are more gentle and not nearly as loud as quakers. I love all of my birdies but my quaker really is a handful. (FYI they are also illegal in many states!)
